All that's missing is a deeper feeling for singers and songs, an old problem that the finest and most atypical track suggests is remediable-Soft Machinist Hugh Hopper's "Memories," which guest stars Whitney Houston and Archie Shepp, transfers into one of the most gorgeous ballads you've ever heard. Chic guitar and planet-rocking vocoders are only the beginning-several of these experiments seem designed to cross over right behind "Eye of the Tiger," and never have electronically processed rhythms throbbed with such life. The result is a protean disco album that sounds like real New York rock and roll. have obviously been listening to the radio instead of complaining about the end of the world. But their great ideas are rewarding rather than tempting, and they're not exalting either. All obviously love the harsh, expansive intelligence of preschlock jazz- (and art-) rock. Beyond drummer Fred Maher and synth threat Michael Beinhorn, his collaborators here include Fred Frith, Sonny Sharrock, and Henry Threadgill augmented by lesser avant-jazzmen. The recording and mix is superb, too! VERY dynamic!Īlthough his angular, slightly hyped-up groove on the instrument is distinctly his own, Bill Laswell is a typical bass player in the most important way: what he expresses depends on who he works with. It's a delightful mix of various big-band musical styles, straight from the August Darnell (Kid Creole) family. I was surprised to find that this has been issued on CD (somewhere). Caravan was the first album he did with R&B producer Don Davis, of Johnnie Taylor fame, and the results payed off. Everyone knows about Bridge Of Sighs, but the story didn't end there. Well, to this day, RT still isn't that well known in the U.S. It's one of their best albums, produced by Maurice White for his Kalimba Productions, but, by then, the pop audience was no longer listening to soul music. It seemed to be a somewhat popular album from late 1979, but still obscured by their Rejoice album from two years earlier. The band was the house band of the Hot Wax/Invictus labels in the early 70s. Don't let it pass you by!Ī strange but smart soul album with a nod towards lite disco. It's OOP on CD, but available as a digital download. Their non-disco album, made when they decided to ditch disco/dance music. Nice bass, too! Too bad Tony Thompson isn't on it. I know, it's all over the place as a cutout, but it cooks! It's a fine return to the classic Chic sound updated to the 90s.
